Joint Statement

After a workshop and first round of discussion, VOIS Cyprus, the National Association of Nigerian Students Turkish Zone (NANS Tr) and representatives, The Gambian Student Association, the Botswana Society, the Liberian Student Society, the Somali Students Union in Cyprus, the Egyptian Student Communities, the Sierra Leoneans in North Cyprus, and the Congolese of North Cyprus met in a working group to discuss challenges facing international students and other migrant groups. Some issues identified included but are not limited to; increasing housing rents, access to healthcare, internationals in prison, immigration problems, gender related discrimination, rising racism and xenophobia, communication barriers, labor exploitation and lack of jobs, and in general the difficult living conditions for international students as a result of the hike in prices and the failure of the responsible authorities to come up with solutions to students’ problems.

Going forward, we will continue ongoing talks and encourage more student representatives and other migrant communities to join this working group to further deliberate on these issues as well as others facing our communities. We believe that it is important that every community is represented in this upcoming coalition to better channel our resources to achieve fair living standards and human rights respect for all.

VOIS Kıbrıs, Ulusal Nijeryalı Öğrenciler Derneği Türk Bölgesi (NANS Tr) ve temsilcileri, Gambiya Öğrenci Derneği, Botsvana Derneği, Liberya Öğrenci Topluluğu, Kıbrıs'taki Somalili Öğrenciler Birliği, Mısır Öğrenci Toplulukları, Kuzey Kıbrıs'taki Sierra Leoneliler ve Kuzey Kıbrıs'taki Kongolular, uluslararası öğrencilerin ve diğer göçmen grupların karşılaştığı zorlukları tartışmak amacıyla bir çalışma grubunda bir araya geldi. Tespit edilen bazı sorunlar, bunlarla sınırlı olmamak kaydıyla; artan konut kiraları, sağlık hizmetlerine erişim, cezaevindeki uluslararası bireyler, göçmenlik sorunları, cinsiyete dayalı ayrımcılık, artan ırkçılık ve yabancı düşmanlığı, emek sömürüsü ve işsizlik, iletişim engelleri ve genel olarak yapılan zamlar sonucunda uluslararası öğrencilerin zor yaşam koşulları ve sorumlu yetkililerin öğrencilerin sorunlarına çözüm üretememesi olarak kaydedilmiştir.

İleriye dönük olarak, yapmakta olduğumuz bu görüşmelere devam edeceğiz ve daha fazla öğrenci temsilcisini ve diğer göçmen topluluklarını bu çalışma grubuna katılmaları için teşvik edeceğiz ayrıca bu konularla sınırlı kalmayıp topluluklarımızın karşılaştığı diğer konuları da tartışacağız. Herkes için insan haklarına saygılı bir ortam yaratmak ve kaynaklarımızın adil yaşam standartlarına uygun olması amacıyla yaklaşan koalisyonda her topluluğun temsil edilmesinin önemli olduğuna inanıyoruz.
